The History & Hollywood Film Series will invite viewers to enjoy and also critically examine the portrayal of the Civil War by filmmakers. Join us for these film screenings which will be followed by a discussion or panel.

Lincoln: the Constitution and the Civil War, a traveling exhibition for libraries, was organized by the National Constitution Center and the American Library Association Public Programs Office. The traveling exhibition has been made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Lincoln: the Constitution and the Civil War is based on an exhibition of the same name developed by the National Constitution Center.

Doris Kearns Goodwin, historian, author and commentator, will speak at Northampton Community College on April 12, 2012 at 7:30p.m. in the Spartan Center. This event is now SOLD OUT.
Goodwin is the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in World War II. Her other bestselling books include Wait Till Next Year, The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys, and Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream. Her most current work, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, won the Lincoln Prize and the Book Prize for American History, as well as being chosen a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. The book has been acquired by Steven Spielberg for a film. Goodwin is a frequent commentator on Presidential history and politics for major networks.

"Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln" by Doris Kearns Goodwin
The NCC Book Discussion Group has chosen Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin as their March discussion title. Goodwin, the book's author, will be visiting Northampton Community College on April 12, 2012, as the culminating speaker for NCC's year-long celebration of The Meaning of Freedom: Civil War 1865 to Today. Team of Rivals focuses on Lincoln's relationship with his cabinet members, each of whom had competed against him for the 1860 Republican nomination. Join us on Tuesday, March 27 at 11 AM in Library Conference Room 440 to discuss this book.

American Citizenship and the 14th Amendment

The debate will connect an important contemporary issue concerning immigration with the Civil War through the original intent of the 14th Amendment, which says that anyone born in the United States is a citizen. Originally this enfranchised the newly freed slaves. Today it is often applied to illegal immigrants who have children born in the United States.

NCC MLK/Black History Month Speaker

Northampton Community College (NCC) will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King and Black History Month with a talk by Professor Kamu Kenyatta, professor of African World Studies at William Patterson University in Wayne, NJ. Professor Kenyatta is a nationally recognized speaker, author and CEO of Touch the Sky Marketing, Inc.
Professor Kenyatta's talk will cover the contributions made by blacks throughout the U.S. from the American Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement. The event is part of our 2012 NEH program "The Meaning of Freedom: The Civil War 1865-Today" and will be held in College Center, Room 220 on Thursday, February 23, 11:15 am – 12:15 pm.
